Lafitte's Cove is the most private of George Mitchell's West End communities, and for a lot of our Houston buyers it's the best second home on the island. Mitchell built Pirates Cove on the bay side in the 1970s, and in the 1990s he followed it with Lafitte's Cove: about 145 homes on the Galveston Bay side of Stewart Road between 11 Mile and 13 Mile Road, most of them on canals, lakes or bayous that lead out to West Bay.
This is a boater's neighborhood. Many homes have a private dock or boathouse, and you can be on the water for redfish and trout in West Bay within minutes of leaving the house. Being on the bay instead of the Gulf also means no beach erosion to watch, calmer water, and sunsets over the marsh instead of the surf. Buyers pay for that: over the past 12 months, bayfront homes on the West End sold for a median of about $1.07 million, slightly above beachfront homes at about $1.04 million (HAR MLS data, October 2025 to October 2026).
Lafitte's Cove does not allow vacation rentals, which is exactly why owners choose it. Your neighbors are owners, not weekend guests, and the streets stay quiet. Typical homes run 2,500 to 3,000 square feet on quarter-acre or smaller lots, and some sections require a social membership at the nearby Galveston Country Club.
Right inside the neighborhood is the Lafitte's Cove Nature Preserve, one of the best spring birding spots on the Texas coast, with boardwalks through wetland and wooded ponds. Galveston Island State Park and the Galveston Coastal Heritage Preserve are a few minutes away, and the drive back to Houston is about an hour.
Lafitte's Cove sits in the upper tier of Galveston bay houses, with prices ranging from the $300,000s for a homesite or older home to around $3 million for a finished waterfront house with a boathouse. We'll tell you which lots have the deepest water and easiest run to the bay, and how bridge clearance affects your boat.
