If you own a boat, Pirates Cove is where we usually start. George Mitchell, the Galveston-born oilman who built Pirates Beach on the Gulf side, began developing Pirates Cove on the Galveston Bay side of Stewart Road in the 1970s. Today it has 588 homes between 11 Mile and 13 Mile Road, most of them on canals, lakes or bayous that run out to West Bay.

A typical Pirates Cove house has the boat in the backyard. Many homes come with a dock, a boathouse or a lift, and the run from your slip to open water in West Bay takes minutes. That's the trade a lot of Houston buyers make: they give up the surf for calm water, bulkheads instead of eroding dunes, a place to keep the boat, and sunsets over the bay. Bay and canal homes are also the West End's busiest waterfront market: over the past 12 months, about three bay and canal homes sold on the West End for every beachfront home (HAR MLS data, October 2025 to October 2026).

Homes here usually run 2,500 to 3,000 square feet on quarter-acre or smaller lots. Unlike Lafitte's Cove next door, Pirates Cove allows vacation rentals, so the house can earn its keep on the weekends you're in Houston. Some sections require a social membership at the Galveston Country Club, which is nearby with golf, tennis, a pool and dining.

You're minutes from Galveston Island State Park, the Lafitte's Cove Nature Preserve and the Galveston Coastal Heritage Preserve for kayaking and birding, and a fire station, groceries and restaurants sit right along FM 3005. The drive to Houston is about an hour, short enough for a Friday-night arrival and a Sunday-evening return.

Pirates Cove is priced in the upper tier of Galveston bay houses, from the $300,000s for an older home or homesite to around $3 million for a rebuilt waterfront house. Before you buy, we'll check water depth at the dock, bridge clearance on the way out to the bay, bulkhead condition and the elevation certificate, the four things that decide whether a canal home works for your boat and your insurance.
